Environmental and Social Officer - Agribusiness, Food and Water

Your role

Responsibilities

The Environmental Social Governance plus (ESG+) department is looking for an Environment Social Officer (ESO) for the Agribusiness Food and Water team, you will be responsible for:

  • Appraising the environmental, social, and human rights impacts and risks in FMO investments, aligning with IFC Performance Standards and UNGP on Business and Human Rights.
  • Collaborating with FMO staff, partners, and clients to define and implement actions in line with IFC PS.
  • Assisting FMO clients in securing technical and financial resources for addressing these issues and managing E&S consultants.
  • Identifying capacity development opportunities and offering training on E&S matters.
  • Streamlining the investment process by fostering lender collaboration.
  • Managing the existing portfolio and reporting in FMO's systems.
  • Contributing to FMO's grievance mechanism and collaborating with external stakeholders.
  • Negotiating and monitoring legal documentation for E&S actions.
  • Enhancing FMO's corporate knowledge through lessons learned and best practices.
  • Representing FMO at various technical meetings and industry events related to environmental, social, and human rights issues.

Our offer

We offer a competitive gross yearly salary of between EUR 60K - 80K (including holiday allowance), depending on seniority, years of experience and background. Premium free pension and 31 holidays. Working remotely abroad for 60 days in a rolling period of 12 months and hybrid way of working (50/50). A 24/7 NS transport card and individual training budget of 2,700.

FMO’s Environmental Social Governance (ESG +) department seeks to deliver impact on the SDGs by being a driving force behind scalable private sector interventions to deliver decent jobs, reduce inequalities between and within countries and transition to a +1.5-degree world.

The ESG+ department consist of 5 teams: (i) AFW E&S; (ii) Energy E&S, (iii) Financial Integration E&S; (iv) Private Equity ESG and Corporate Governance and (v) Sustainability Integration standards.

The AFW E&S team currently consists of 6 environmental and social professionals with different environmental and social expertise, and an E&S Manager. The Environmental and Social Officers (ESOs) work hand in hand with our investment staff and our clients to ensure due regard of environmental, social, and human rights impact and risk considerations throughout the investment process.

Your background

Needed Competencies For This Role


  • 5-10 years of experience in risk management following IFC Performance Standards (IFC PS)
  • Experience in emerging markets, especially Africa and/or Latin America
  • Experience working with/for private sector firms to identify environmental, social and/or human rights risks, prioritizing them, and developing mitigation measures.
  • Affinity to the Agriculture sector is an advantage.
  • Fluent in English and another language (French or Spanish proficiency is an advantage)
  • Master's degree in relevant field
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and travel frequently.
  • Intrinsic motivation to aim for a better world, combined with a can-do mentality.
