Orrick has an exciting opening for an ESG Research Analyst (Research Analyst), who will join our market-leading Environmental, Social and Governance Group (ESG Group). The Research Analyst will work directly with Orrick attorneys, staff and clients on a broad range of issues related to sustainability, climate change, corporate governance, and impact. Responsibilities will include the identification of relevant ESG issues for a range of companies, the collection and analysis of key ESG performance metrics, the preparation of client facing reports, and research and writing on emerging ESG trends. Using established research and analytics skills, the Research Analyst will play a critical role in executing on internal and client deliverables, and will be a key support in the ongoing development of our ESG practice.

This position could be based in any of our U.S. offices (Austin; Boston; Chicago; Houston; Los Angeles; New York; Menlo Park; Orange County, Portland, Sacramento; San Francisco; Santa Monica, Seattle, Washington DC or Wheeling, WV) and consideration given for 100% remote US locations.

As an ESG Research Analyst, you will have significant exposure to public companies, investment managers, and a wide range of privately held portfolio companies. Discretion, integrity and respect for confidential information are essential.

The Research Analyst will report directly to the Director of Environmental, Social and Governance and Corporate Governance, and will work in close partnership with attorneys and other staff in the ESG Group and other experts at the firm to support ESG Group and client goals.

You will perform a wide array of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Identify relevant ESG topics, distribute questionnaires and data collection forms, review client documents, and analyze ESG data across a range of companies
  • Collaborate with the ESG Group to prepare reports on performance across a range of ESG topics, including the preparation of data visualizations and written reports
  • Work with attorneys and staff to improve methods and processes for data collection and analysis, and to provide feedback on best practices and areas of potential improvements across ESG activities
  • Stay informed of trends in ESG, including ESG related regulations, guidance frameworks, and corporate best practice, and contribute to ESG thought leadership at Orrick
  • Support due diligence activities and research assignments into various ESG topics, and prepare detailed due diligence and research reports for clients
  • Assist in client onboarding through conference calls and document reviews, including the review of existing client ESG programs and the implementation of improvements and project plans over time


What We Would Like You to Bring to the Team:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required
  • Masters degree preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in research, consulting, investor relations, corporate reporting, or other related field, with experience in sustainability or ESG reporting or research preferred
  • Effective communication and writing skills, together with an exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent computer skills, including competencies in Microsoft Office
  • Deliver strong customer service, commit to meeting deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Understand law firm processes and attorney-client relationships
  • Appropriately prioritize to execute tasks across several projects with complex variables and budgets
  • Collaborate with teams of partners, associates and other professionals at all levels
  • Demonstrate exceptional problem solving and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Exhibit a high degree of initiative
  • Ability to research, collect, manipulate, and analyze data

The amount of pay offered will be determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications, relevant experience, primary work location, market data, and internal equity. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
